Irrigation and Fertigation Specialist

The person in this position is responsible to support farm irrigation and fertigation programs, soil moisture monitoring, and supervise assigned crews. From our farm fields to the glass, everything we do is to help brew great beer. This position is designed to help maximize the production of our farms.

Essential functions/majority of time spent on:
• Coordinate watering and fertigation schedules
• Integrate soil moisture monitoring, and current irrigation information to develop effective crop need-based irrigation methods
• Implement electronic water flow monitoring, timer based and/or radio valve controls
• Develop and maintain accurate electronic record-keeping
• Manage irrigation stations, suggest improvements to infrastructure, and lead implementation of improvements
Requirements/conditions of employment:
• Must be able to pass a background check and preemployment drug screen.
• Must be able to work the scheduled 40 hours workweek with overtime during the growing season.
• Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
• Reputation for acting with integrity, innovation, passion, customer service, and teamwork.
• Current chemical application license, current first aid/CPR card and valid driver’s license
• Bilingual English/Spanish

Preferred qualifications:
• Associates degree or higher irrigation management and/or agronomy, or equivalent
• 2+ years fertigation/irrigation experience with drip system management
• Experience with irrigation management systems and software
• Able to supervise multiple work crews simultaneously
• Able to train employees in all phases of irrigation and fertigation of crops

Research Scientist

Research Scientist Overview

John I. Haas, Inc., the leading supplier of hops and advanced hop products for the brewing industry, is currently seeking a highly talented Research Scientist to join our Innovations team. The successful candidate will serve in a research and development role by planning, designing, and independently conducting experiments and associated research activities directed toward identified, strategic business opportunities. Specific job functions will include:

  • Development of innovative new hop and hop-based products from ideation to commercialization through laboratory experimentation, pilot scale-up, and commercial trials
  • Improvement of existing Barth-Haas Group products through cost reductions, yield increases, new applications, and/or improvement of best practices
  • Support of high-priority research projects through rigorous and creative experimentation in a team environment, and
  • Utilization of advanced relationship skills to establish positive interactions with diverse stakeholders such as customers, vendors, and toll manufacturers in order to advance specific projects in a collaborative fashion. The position will involve overseeing the successful transition of promising research into brewing application trials and through to commercialization. Thus, qualified candidates will be knowledgeable and skilled scientists that are highly motivated and able to apply their talents to the development of new products and processes within varied areas.Excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a diverse research environment comprised of chemists, scientists, and brewers are expected. A track record of developing intellectual property and publishing research contributions in scientific journals is highly desirable.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related scientific field and 1+ years of post-graduate or industrial experience
  • Excellent laboratory skills and the willingness to perform bench and process work
  • Demonstrated understanding of hops and brewing
  • Instrumental analysis experience including GC-MS, HPLC, and UV-Vis spectrophotometry
  • Product development experience

Brewing Solutions Specialist South America (SA)

Position Summary:

The Brewing Solutions Specialist will operate the 15-gallon brewery, and manage/execute the brewing trials using new hops and hop products. Additionally, he/she will be responsible for managing and supporting technical services activities in the Latin America Region, including sales support in product commercialization and management, external publications and presentations, and development of technical literature. Will work with the customers on hop products use, process optimization, beer formulation, and sensory evaluations. Will accompany sales representatives and company executives on customer visits to provide training, consulting, assisting with product development, and identifying new commercial opportunities.

Travel is involved as well as special projects, customer activities requires occasional working during evening hours and weekends.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in brewing, food science, biology, or related field.
  2. Brewing training, a passion for beer and flavors. Demonstrated deep understanding of brewing industry.
  3. 7+ years of experience in brewing or fermentations.
  4. Strong work ethic, team player, self-starter, and resourceful
  5. Hard-working, efficient, comfortable with time pressure. Flexibility and willingness to work within changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  6. Excellent communications and interpersonal skills, including technical writing and public speaking.
  7. Spanish / English bilingual required.

Associate Scientist

Overview

John I. Haas, Inc., the leading supplier of hops and advanced hop products for the brewing industry, is currently seeking a highly talented Associate Scientist to join our Innovations team. The successful candidate will serve a critical role to support the research and development of innovative new hop and hop-based products. Specific job functions will include:

  • Independently performing R&D trials on new hop products and processes under minimal supervision and/or in teams
  • Maintaining thorough, accurate, and orderly records for all relevant activities, including laboratory and pilot plant trials
  • Collaborating cross-functionally for the purpose of commercializing new products and implementing process improvements
  • Work up of experimental/trial data and communication of results to appropriate stakeholders
  • Operation and maintenance of laboratory and pilot plant equipment and instruments in a safe, clean, and orderly fashion, and
  • Support of the overall innovations department by updating, managing, and maintaining electronic project notebooks, servers, and SharePoint portals.This is a hands-on position that involves running lab- to pilot-scale experiments/trials, instrumental analysis, and working collaboratively across different functional areas.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Strong work ethic, team player, and self-starter
  • B.S. in chemistry, biology, food science, or a related scientific field
  • One to three years of applicable work experience
  • Ability to carry out duties and instructions in a diligent and logical scientific manner with minimal amounts of supervision
  • Familiarity and experience with the operation of standard laboratory instruments including gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometers
  • Ability to perform the physical tasks necessary for the safe operation of pilot plant and laboratory equipmentAdvanced degree in chemistry or a related scientific fieldExperience in a production environment
  • Experience in hops, brewing, wine-making, nutraceutical, or food science R&D roles
